Stock from the factory, this engine produces and adequate 200hp & 151lb-ft of torque. The FA20 engine is a 2.0L 4-Cylinder Boxer Engine. This week on First Gear Fridays, I talk about Subaru’s FA20 engine, which is what powers the all new Subaru BRZ. This basically means that it has huge potential to produce a lot more horsepower and torque. From an engineering perspective, certain engine mapping, layouts and designs allow for a huge scope of tunability. It can come from increasing the displacement (engine size), adding more cylinders (more combustion potential = more power), or utilizing forced-induction (turbos/superchargers). Differential (regulates wheel speed via Drive Shaft)įinding a way to produce more power can come from different methods.Clutch/Transmission (which operates different gears for different engine speeds).Engines transmit “x” (variable) amount of power to the road via 3 main component parts: What is an “Engine”? In the most basic sense, it is what drives and powers the car, contributed by multiple factors of moving mechanical parts, internal combustion and air intake. To sum it up, the NSX embodies what I think are the most important attributes: Simplicity & Functionality.įirst-Gear Fridays : “ Engines: FA20…More like F18 Tomcat.” Written by Paolo Manalo Despite being a bit dated, the NSX (the first ones anyway) still look better than modern science projects today. From certain angles, it looks like a Ferrari. If it weren’t for Ayrton Senna and his technical input, it wouldn’t be the car that it is today.Īnother reason why I chose this car is because of its looks. The chassis, suspension set-up, and it’s raw nature of the car made it perfect for the enthusiast in mind. By today’s standards, that may not be a lot but what it lacks in power more than makes up for it in how it handles and holds itself. A perfect balance of power and low-end torque for daily driving. Powered by a 3.0L V6, it produced a modest 274hp & 210 lb-ft of torque. From regular maintenance to replacing the timing belt, it’s as easy as maintaining an Acura Legend at that time.ĭespite the practical and reliable nature of the NSX, no compromises were made to the performance. ![]() Unlike other cars that it competed with (Ferrari 348/355, Lamborghini Diablo) it was also very easy to maintain. The NSX was also the first production car to use a full aluminum chassis and the first to showcase Honda’s (then new) V-TEC engine.
